In a bar in the backstreets of Shinjuku

Shinjuku may be one of the crime hotspots in Tokyo, however it can also be a lot of fun. In the backstreets hiding behind the neon flashes and imploring door men lies Golden Gai, a collection of tiny bars and residences. I hadn't been in this area for ages, having terminated my friendship with this guy who I used to go out drinking with there, having tired of his attempts of getting into my pants.

You really do need to be taken into this area for the first time. The bars are all very different and have a set of clientele and regulars. Still when you find your place it can be very comfortable.

It's important to have places to go where people know you. Usually going out feels quite isolating - you are served, you pay, you go. I have a few places where I can walk in and the people will shout "Hey MJ!". We'll chat and catch up and eat and maybe share a drink together.

It's a nice feeling.

small places are my favorite. I go to Shibuya's Nonbei Yokocho...I've been going since, er, junior high school...my whole family too!

I've also found some great little ones right in my neighborhood and love going there by myself. Got my 'nakama' there...
