Air Stocking

Popped down to Yokohama yesterday for lunch with the J-Mum and J-Aunt. They parked us in Sony Plaza while they went off to buy a present for J-Mum's boss' wife's Birthday, but really it was a chance for her to run into Takashimaya and buy us some of their amazing ebi-senbe (prawn crackers) because dammit there was no way we were going to escape from omiyage even if it was a spur of the moment get together (J-Aunt also gave us some cherries, even though she shouted us lunch at Kikachi - some famous expensive restaurant where you need to use several forks).
While in Sony Plaza we came across the latest sensation in body maintenance - the Air Stocking. It's like a foundation you spray on your legs instead of wearing stockings. Understandable in way - Japanese summers are gross and wearing stockings feels bad, not to mention bacteria enticing. The Boy grabbed my arm and tested it out on me, as you can see in the pic I don't think the colour suits me very much ne?
Not only that but it felt really yucky - and it was tricky to wash off too.
I'm not fond of wearing stockings. But I think I would be less fond of spraying my legs with this goop before going out. I know that stockings give an outfit more of a "polish" but in summer I think it's just as fine to have smooth, well moisturized legs on display. Besides I think it's dreadful to see stockinged feet in sandals.
Another issue with Air Stocking is - like it's cousin the self-tanner - it's not the easiest stuff to apply. Streaked legs are worse than slightly pale bare legs anyday.
I'm not sure what's up with all of this wanting to look darker in summer anyway. I'm pale - I don't tan - I don't care if people need to wear sunglasses to look at me because of the reflection from my skin on the beach. I did care once back in the summer when I was 15 - but a week of painful sunburn recovery put an end to any bronzed delusions. We've been force fed and adhered to an image that tanned skin makes you look healthy and pale skin means you are weak and unhealthy. And I challenge anyone who believes this to be true to a race up Mt Fuji.

Sweaty legs squeezed into nylon/lycra is bad enough, but painting your sweaty legs evenly first thing in the morning is gonna be hard to do. Maybe its only for the girls who have mastered the whole tanning creme thing and are ready to graduate to airbrushing their legs on a daily basis...
You guys know that your skin absorbs stuff, right? So when your legs are covered with this, what will they be absorbing exactly? Mmmm, i think i dont wanna look at the ingredients!
I have a few problems with the whole 'pantyhose as work uniform' thing anyway. How does having nice, smooth-looking, evenly toned legs help make a woman's work more professional? How does it help her do her job better? Im all for acting professionally in work contexts, (despite the obviousness of the fact that clothing is irrelevant to the quality of work produced) but when there are health problems with the items i am expected to wear, i think society has to revise its image of what constitutes professional.
Oh, and finally, as one who has been blinded by the light of MJ's skin, and has been dragged up MT Fuji once already by here, i dont recommend either experience... so be careful!
