Kanagawa Tourist Tips #24

Last Wednesday, which we may be referring to as the "Last Day of Summer", J-Mum, the Boy and I went up to the top of Shonan-dai, one of the highest mountains in the Hiratsuka area. The TV tower on top has spawned a rather quirky tradition of putting a lock whith your name (and usually your loved ones) on it and the date (featured in photos). Some people really go over the top trying to make their contribution stand out - with bike chains and coloured locks. They are cleared off about once a year but it doesn't stop people from making the trek and attaching a lock.

I wonder though how many of these couples are still together?

added flavour

I love the spontaneous creation of ritual that you often see here, the way that people use totally modern stuff to create new rituals with, the way that they take something ordinary and transform it into a location for expressing something. And Japan being so susceptible to viral ideas, you know that its gonna take off and everyone will be doing it in about 5 mins...

Did you guys put one on there?
