Tracking Obsession

I'll admit that I got a swag of neat stuff for my Birthday. Especially books. I'm up to my ears in techie books now - spent about 7 hours studying up on Flash, xml and dhtml yesterday.

One of my naughty friends gave me a huge gift certificate from Amazon. So of course I had to order from them immediately.

The thing that worries me is how often I check up on my order status. Where are my little bundles of joy now? Finally winging their way to this far-flung coast?

I wonder if it's because the two books that I've been trying to get since June are finally (well one of them at least) going to be in my hot little hands.

Which is a little bit odd considering that they had been ordered from Amazon Japan in June - they cancelled one of my orders and then the other one was delayed so frequently that it was more a case of bugger it I'll have a go somewhere else. Their site also pretty much sucks in terms of bilingual usability too.

On the other hand the bonus with Amazon Japan is that you can pay by cash on delivery.

I'll admit that if the book is in stock things go smoothly - the Zope book I ordered arrived way before I thought it would.

I've finally learned something though. Since I cut up my credit card a while back I don't shop online. So I could never really understand the fear, trepidation and excitment involved with ordering something by a click like magic from my own chair and then waiting for it to weave it's way to me - even though I worked at an online anime store here for a year and a half. Only now can I comprehend the disappointment of having an order cancelled. Of why people would become so emotional about being denied something they've seen and wanted...

I never thought I would be the type to develop a tracking obsession though...I'm a confirmed shopping-hater...hmmm there's probably a support group for this somewhere online must go look...

added flavour

First, I owe you some belated happy birthday wishes. I saw mention of it in a few places, but this is the first chance I've really had to extend birthday greetings of my own. :-)

COD for Amazon Japan orders was something I never thought I would use at first, but it has since grown on me--to the extent that I will order from Amazon.jp as a matter of preference, just for that feature alone.

I've never, ever, ever had an order canceled, though. It surprised me, as I had never heard of such a thing happening to anyone before. Is this common?

The American and UK sites really suck at bilingual usability, too.

Tracking FedEx packages are fun too as you can do it on your keitai. It is fun to watch all of the places your packages get to visit before they arrive at your doorstep.
